Open Cluster M46
Photographed by Scott Davis on February 10, 2013
From Ahwahnee Hills Observatory
Messier 46, also known as NGC2437, is a large open cluster in the constellation Puppis. It lies approximately 5,500 light years from Earth. A planetary nebula, NGC2438, also appears in this image. Astronomers do not believe that the nebula lies within M46; rather, it is just superimposed on it.
