Open Cluster M46

Description: Messier 46, also known as NGC2437, is a large open cluster in the constellation Puppis. It lies approximately 5,500 light years from Earth. A planetary nebula, NGC2438, also appears in this image. Astronomers do not believe that the nebula lies within M46; rather, it is just superimposed on it.

Imaging Scope/Lens: Orion Astrograph 8" f/3.9 Newtonian
Mount/Tripod: Celestron CGEM
Guide Scope/Camera: Orion Shorttube 80mm w/ Starshoot Autoguider
Exposure Details: Camera settings were ISO 1600 with 50-second exposures. This image is a composite of 40 light frames and 15 dark frames.
