Star Party Etiquette

The following is intended to help make sure everyone has a enjoyable time at our star parties.

  • If you are bringing a telescope, please try to arrive before dark.
  • If you come to the star party without a telescope, please park away from the observing area.
  • Don’t use white light in the observing area. Dim red light is preferred; if for some reason you MUST use white light, shout out a warning.
  • Make sure your car doesn’t violate the above. Backup lights and even interior lights can ruin someone’s night vision.
  • Never touch anyone else’s equipment without permission, but don’t be afraid to ask. Never touch any glass optical surface.
  • Avoid loud and boisterous behavior. Stargazing is a quiet, peaceful activity.
  • Music- Remember that the music that you love may be extremely irritating to others. When in doubt use headphones.
  • Watch your step. Some scopes and equipment require external power; there may be wires on the ground.
  • Visitor or newcomer? Please be sensitive to the amount of time spent with one astronomer. The astronomers are there to enjoy the sky, not to give lessons. (Except of course when the star party is specifically organized for the public and/or newcomers.
  • Smoking- smokers should stay downwind of the telescopes. Just because you’re outside doesn’t mean your smoke isn’t annoying.

Enjoy the night under the stars.
